This is very sad, sudden and hard to believe. Butch was going in for back surgery last week and this was the first winter in over 20+ years where he would not be taking his team down or be a part of the state tournament - which was sad in and of itself. Now this.
As he has retired from coaching/managing his team, we were planning a ceremony for him before the spring season.
Butch started playing in 1967, and started the FCFFL over 30 years ago, gradually building it up to what it is today. He was a fixture in the adult sports community of our County and promoted our sport there continuously through the explosion of softball and soccer in the area.
We do owe most of where we are today to what he worked for a great deal of his life.
There are very few people in the whole country with the accomplishments in, and passion for our sport even comparable to Butch. This is terrible news, and he`ll be greatly missed.

The passing of our dear friend and confidant is very unfortunate. His love of flag football was well known. His efforts at excellence not only brought honors to his team and league, but also to the VFFA through his hard-won National Championships. I have lost a dear friend in Butch, he will be sorely missed. - RCJ

As many of you already know Butch passed away a few days ago.
We contacted Everly funeral home this morning and were told that the Hicks family would prefer that friends and family send a donation to the American Heart Association (AHA) instead of flowers. The FCFFL and IFFL plan on making a donation to the AHA. Along with the league donation the CCR Novas and Lazy Sunday have also agreed to make a donation to the AHA. Tom, Rob and myself would like the teams that remember Butch and played when he ran this league to consider making a donation to the AHA from your team.
If you do decided to make a donation to the AHA on Butch`s behalf you can mail it directly to the AHA or contact the local AHA office.

For those players, and coach`s that remember Butch you know what he did to make this sport grow. For those of you that weren`t lucky enough to know Butch the fact is he is the man that made flag football what it is today in Northern Virginia. Many people only remember Butch as the coach of My Plumber but he was much more then that. He was the man who started and made the FCFFL what it is today and the simple fact is if it wasn`t for him the FCFFL would not be what it is today, period!
On a personal note I owe a great deal of gratitude to Butch for showing me how to run this thing and always being able to reach out to him for advice even after he stepped away from being the commish for the FCFFL. I will miss his words of wisdom.
Butch`s viewing will be from 5:00PM to 8:00PM this Thursday and his funeral is scheduled for this Friday at 11:00AM. Both will be at the same location which is:
